Holistic Skin Care

Holistic Skin Care

By Lisa W of Ancient Paths, Naturally!

Years ago I started to struggle with an irritating skin issue, psoriasis.   It was quite uncomfortable and frustrating.  In my quest to discover what might be the cure for this skin condition I learned quite a lot about how the whole body works together and that skin symptoms reveal more about our health than a simple skin issue.  Let me share with you a little about what I learned about skin care from a holistic perspective, including topical treatments, nutritional and herbal therapies, how our organ systems work together, and the spiritual roots of the issues I was dealing with.

Our Skin
Our skin is the first thing people notice when they look at us.  It is our miracle garment.  It’s soft, pliable, strong, waterproof, and self-repairing.  It communicates our age, our health status, and our emotional status.
The skin is our largest single organ, making up about 16% of the body weight of an average sized person.  Healthy skin regulates our body temperature and holds in moisture.  This is no small feat, considering that, by weight, we are about 60% water.  It’s also the outer wrapper of our immune system, protecting us from a host of invaders.  Our skin helps us excrete waste products, but it’s also an avenue for absorbing a wide range of dangerous chemicals.  Our skin also turns the sun’s rays into vitamin D, an essential nutrient for good health.  Our skin is amazing!

Topical Skin Treatments
When we have irritated skin it’s common for us to reach for something to put on it to soothe the irritation.  It’s important that we know what we’re putting on our skin because there are some nasty things in traditional skin care products.
According to The Environmental Working Group, personal care products expose children (and adults) to an average of 60 chemicals every day, which they inhale or absorb through the skin. Recent studies have demonstrated that product packaging rarely reveals the concentration, or adverse effects, of the pervasive chemicals found in every day products.  It’s just as important to know what’s NOT in your favorite product as it is to know what IS in it.  Our family uses Shaklee skin care products because they provide us with an ingredient glossary that describes every ingredient found in all of their products.  It also explains the difference between natural, naturally derived and scientifically formulated ingredients.
It’s good to know what they DON’T put in any of their products as well as what they do.  Things like parabens (endocrine disruptor, breast cancer), FD&C and D&C dyes (carcinogen, protein inhibitor, cause of hyperactivity in children, immune distruptor), butyl cellosolve (causes reproductive issues, birth defects, carcinogen), formaldehyde (carcinogen, skin rash, asthma), phenols (dermatitis, cytotoxicity, kidney damage) and propylene glycol (endocrine distruptor, allergies and asthma) are never used in any Shaklee products.  They also avoid using more than 15 other dangerous chemicals in their products.  Unfortunately, all of these dangerous chemicals are routinely found in supermarket shampoos, moisturizers, shaving and cleansing gels, tanning solutions, pharmaceuticals and even your toothpaste.  A quick internet search will reveal that you don’t want to be exposed to these chemicals, ever

Homemade Herbal Salves
Along with Shaklee’s personal care product line, our family has begun to make our own herbal salves to aid in healing of cuts.  Living on a small farm and having a busy lifestyle, sometimes someone gets a cut or a nasty gash.  Rather than traditional ointments, we have taken to harvesting herbs in our garden, drying them and creating our own salves to help fight infection and encourage healing.  Herbal salves contain only oils, herbs and beeswax and will not clog pores.  An oil infusion of herbs such as lavender, comfrey, plantain, self-heal, and chamomile added to a beeswax base has had tremendous healing properties and we have seen amazing results.  For example, my son cut off the tip of his finger just days before leaving for an intense weeklong outdoor summer event.  He made himself an herbal salve and added honey to the mix.  He applied it to his fingertip and covered it with a bandaid twice a day.  Not only did it not get infected but by the time he came home the skin had grown back with fingerprints – no scarring!  We were very impressed.  Needless to say, when my husband severely injured his foot a few years ago, we used our son’s salve to help heal the wound.  Because the salves are homemade with primarily homegrown herbs, we are confident that we’re not putting toxic chemicals onto our skin.  Whenever we need herbal oils that we cannot grow I use oils from Young Living Essential Oils

Nutrition For The Skin
Shaklee’s nutritional programs have been developed with over 55 years of nutritional research and independent clinical studies.  Because of their science-based approach, the food based supplements and Enfuselle Skin Care program contain the right nutrients, in the right forms and concentrations, to rejuvenate damaged skin, peeling away the years, so that you can maintain that healthy glow all without harsh chemicals found in traditional skin care regimens.  The Enfuselle System combined with Shaklee’s food based nutritional products provides a solid nutritional base for your skin, as well as the rest of your body.  A solid nutritional approach to skin issues such as acne, eczema and psoriasis have been shown to protect, heal and rejuvenate our skin.  Speaking before the American Academy of Dermatology, New York-based dermatologist Karen E Burke, MD reviewed the antioxidants that have been proven to be the most effective in protecting skin and reversing photo-aging damage from UV exposure.  She said, “There are three antioxidants that have been proven to decrease the effect of the sun on the skin and actually prevent further damage.  They are:  selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C.”  She went on to say that “although many topical formulations contain antioxidants, very few are actually effective in preventing or reversing damage to the skin.  That is because almost all these formulations only contain minute concentrations of the necessary antioxidants, and they are not well absorbed by the skin.”
Antioxidants keep free radicals form damaging cell walls and other cell structures like DNA, which helps protect us from cancer.  Selenium preserves tissue elasticity and slows down the aging and hardening of tissues.  Natural sourced vitamin E reduces sunburn, chronic UV-induced damage and production of cancer cells, associated with a 70% reduced risk for basal cell carcinoma.  It also reduces wrinkles and improves skin texture.  Topically, naturally sourced vitamin E soothes dry, rough skin and combined with vitamin C creates a highly protective lotion against sun damage.  Vitamin C is well known for fighting free radical damage and is the most abundant antioxidant found naturally in the skin.  It slows accelerated skin aging and can prevent the consequences of prolonged sun exposure.  Other important nutrients for our skin include zinc, B complex vitamins, and omega oils.

Body Systems & Emotions
As I was learning and applying what I was learning to myself in trying to treat and heal the psoriasis that I was struggling with, also learned that the organ systems in our bodies affect one another.  For example, in my research I learned that when the liver isn’t functioning properly that it often affects the skin.   The liver is the second largest organ in our bodies, after the skin which is the largest.  I was glad to be on a good nutritional program and hoped that my liver would find the nutritional support it needed to be happier.  By now the itchy and frustrating skin problems were significantly less but when it would flare up, boy would I be miserable!  So I went on a quest to find out what else might help my liver become happier.   Because I didn’t drink or have a liver disease and was cutting out chemical exposure in my home, I decided to follow a new and intriguing thread in my search.
One of the things I learned was that emotions affect our organ systems in different ways and emotions such as anger and frustration have negative effects on the liver while kindness has a positive effect on the liver.  Anger and frustration damage the liver. So here I was with a catch-22 because I was frustrated with the psoriasis and sometimes I did find myself getting angry about it.  I also learned that the liver is often the source for headaches, which I had been having on and off for a while up till this point.  Now I had two immediate reasons to support my liver – psoriasis and headaches.  I had multiple reasons to really get myself in check and control my frustration better.  Not only did it not do any good real good for me to be frustrated, it was causing me physical damage and causing the very thing I was frustrated about to be worse.

Spiritual Roots of Disease
The final key in unlocking the mystery of the, by that time, come-and-go psoriasis was learning about the spiritual roots of disease.  I learned that spiritually psoriasis is rooted in self-hatred, a lack of self-esteem and conflict with identity.  These go along well with the anger and frustration that damages the liver and I saw the connection right away.  While you may not consider these issues spiritual as much as emotional it’s important to know that as a believer in and follower of the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob I know that my G-d has said that He loves me and accepts me, so for me to harbor hate in my heart, even for myself, is a sin.  It says that I don’t believe that He is truthful when He says that He loves me and considers me a special treasure, it is my way of calling Him a liar.  And if I cannot even love myself, how can I love anyone else, like my husband and my children?  I needed to come to grips with the sin in my life and repent, turn around and stop sinning, and walk in the right way.  At the time we were learning this material my elbows itched like mad.  About a week after working through some of the weighty issues in the course we were taking I noticed that my elbows were fine – 100% fine!  There wasn’t any trace of the psoriasis left on my arms at all, the skin looked and felt completely normal!  Not only did this process open the door for healing of my skin, but I was healed of a debilitating allergy to tree nuts as well.  Praise G-d for His healing touch!!

While I once dealt with adult acne, psoriasis and other issues I now deal with none of these things in my life.  My family and I have been completely changed as we have taken charge of our health and learned about holistic health care, and applied what we’ve learned.  We have been created perfectly and it leaves me in wonder and awe of our Creator.  From food based nutritional supplementation, chemical free personal products, herbal treatments, balancing the body systems, keeping our emotions balanced and fighting against sin in our lives, we will all tell you that we are not only healthier, but we’re happier too!

Inline Speed Skater: Jennifer Rodriguez

When Jennifer Rodriguez switched from roller to inline speed skating in the early 1990s, she had no idea what to expect. “I thought I’d give it a try and see how far I could go.” Turns out, the Miami native went as far as the World Championships and on to Nagano to compete in the 1998 Games.  Then Salt Lake City—where she won two bronze medals—and Torino for the 2002 and 2006 Games, respectively. And most recently, she competed in four events at the Vancouver Games, something she’d never thought she’d do after hanging up her skates in 2006. For this superstar athlete whose nicknames include “Miami Ice” and “J-Rod,” the focus wasn’t so much on winning, but skating her best. “It was about seeing how good I can do for myself, how far I can push myself, and getting the best out of myself,” she says. “And if that’s good enough to get a medal, then that’s icing on the cake.” The 33-year-old admits that getting back in the game after a two-year retirement was harder than she thought. Mentally, she was more determined than ever. Physically, her muscles had a lot of catching up to do. That meant hours of intense training—and Shaklee products. “I’m not a believer in products,” she admits. “But with Shaklee, I notice a big difference and am impressed with how fast I recover. I don’t feel sore after working out. One time, I ran out of Physique and it was then that I felt the soreness. So yeah, it works.” And more important, Jennifer says she doesn’t worry about the quality of Shaklee products when it comes to the strict testing standards she—like many elite athletes—must face. “They pay attention to the purity of their products. It’s nice to know that a company cares.”

Handcyclist and Wheelchair Racer: Craig Blanchette

Craig Blanchette is unstoppable. A four-time winner of the Portland (Ore.) Marathon, he holds 21 world records in elite wheelchair racing and a bronze medal from the Games in Seoul. Indeed, Craig knows what it takes to succeed and admits that although winning is great, it’s not everything. Rather, passion is what fuels him to do what he does. “It’s now or never,” he says. “You have to decide what you are made of.” A double amputee since birth and an inspiration to many, Craig has shown that there are no limits as to what one can achieve. He was inducted into the Oregon Disabled Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and, like Kevin Hansen (his coach of 15 years), Craig dedicates his time to training other wheelchair racers—that is when he’s not skateboarding, rock climbing, or scuba diving. Craig credits part of his athletic achievements to proper nutrition and is a huge fan of Shaklee Physique. He says, “Physique allows me to have better quality workouts, to get better performance out of the same amount of work, and to recover more quickly.”

Figure Skater: Ashley Wagner

Young Ashley Wagner is a championship-caliber figure skater with an impressive list of accomplishments. Her motto? Persistence pays off.  At the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championship Ashley earned a fourth-place finish, beating 21 of the nation’s best. The following year, she finished the event with a bronze medal in the 2010.  Ashley placed 5th at her first Grand Prix event of the season at the NHK Trophy in Japan and then she won the bronze medal at her second Grand Prix of the season at the Rostelecom Cup in Russia. “It’s all about focus and practice,” she says. “You have to fall 100 times before you get something perfect.” Hence, her rigorous training regimen; Wagner works out five hours a day, six days a week. On top of that, she has a job and is working toward her associate’s degree. With her busy schedule, she relies on Shaklee products, including Cinch Snack Bars to help her stay energized and Stress Relief Complex to help her stay relaxed. “I always bring a ton of Cinch bars with me to competitions,” she says. “They’re pretty tasty and great in terms of providing energy and nutrients.”

Earn A Living - Make A Difference

EARN A LIVING - MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I am a Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutritionist who fell in love with Shaklee in 2005. I was looking for products that I could recommend to my clients that worked and were safe. Much to my surprise, not only did Shaklee score big time with their sports nutrition line, they also provided me with a way to supplement my income. This lucrative model has also given me the opportunity to share the business with others who were looking for either supplemental or full time income.

While my kids are in school, I am able to run my business from home, get my products for free and earn a part time income. It is very rewarding to build a business that has unlimited financial potential and helps people get healthier. Being able to show my kids in today‘s world that you can earn a living and make a difference and have a great lifestyle is priceless.

One of the most important fringe benefits of this business is that I have met some fantastic people who are now my closest friends.

Marathon Runner: Carl Rundell

“In marathon running and in life, there are no such things as unrealistic goals, only unrealistic time frames.” Words of wisdom from 41-year-old Carl Rundell, an elite marathoner who began training seriously at age 32. Within four years, he qualified for the 2004 U.S. Men’s Marathon Trials, and in 2008 he finished first at the U.S. Masters Championship 25K run. In addition to averaging 120 miles a week in training, Carl says he relies on Shaklee products to “provide the foundation” he needs to stay healthy and perform his best.  "In running, as in life, you do not last long on what you have done; you have to keep on delivering."

Carl grew up on Shaklee products—thanks to his mom—and today is a fan of Shaklee Vitalizer, Vivix, and Shaklee Physique. “The first thing that goes into my system after a long run is Physique,” he says. “I find that it helps me recover a lot quicker and gives me that competitive edge.” Results aside, Carl says it’s also about quality. “I know (Shaklee) products are safe. I don’t have to think twice about what I’m putting in my body.”

          Endurance Mountain Biker: Lauri Brandt

Laurie Brandt is a 3-time Colorado State Mountain Bike Champion for Professional Women, a Colorado State Cyclocross Champion, and 4-time winner of the Leadville Trail 100.  Her course record for the 100-mile Leadville race still stands after 12 years.  From 1992 to 1996, she raced full time on the professional cross country mountain bike circuit, where she was ranked as high as 10th in the World Cup series and was in the top 10 NORBA (National Off-Road Bicycle Association) National ranking all 5 years of her full time career.  In 1995 Shaklee began to sponsor Laurie as part of Team Shaklee, she was the only mountain biker on their cycling roster and she was part of Shaklee’s Top Performers program.  In 1997 and 1998, Laurie continued to race in Colorado, her home state, as she transitioned to her career as a professional geologist.  “I wasn’t done racing when I needed to move on with my professional career, so I continued to race on the regional level.  Some of the best and most challenging races in the country are right here in Colorado.”  She won the State Championship and the Leadville Trail 100 in those two years.

In 2009, Laurie competed in the Growler endurance mountain race in Gunnison, the Leadville Silver Rush 50 mile race, and the Leadville Trail 100 mile race.  She also rode in the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, a 500+ mile ride in 6 days and numerous century (100 mile) rides.  “Training for and competing in races is the best way to stay in shape,” Laurie comments.  “I love the challenges that racing offers and I like seeing what I can do.  I also want my daughters to see me doing something physical that I enjoy and that takes a work ethic to achieve.”  Getting enough sleep and eating the right foods and supplements are essential to achieving those goals.  “I can’t imagine trying to do what I’m doing without the support of Shaklee products.  My girls and I use the Energizing Soy Protein every day, for example, and it gives us high quality protein without meat products and fat.”

Will Laurie Brandt ever call it quits? According to the 47-year-old, “It’s never over ’til it’s over.”

Competing all over the world in pentathlon competitions, it is critical that Eli keeps his performance up, and his body strong and healthy.  With Shaklee as part of his team,

Doris D. used to expect that her children would be sick many times over the winter, with many trips to the doctor for ear infections, colds, coughs and fevers.  She figured it was "just normal".  Then last year she started her whole family using Shaklee nutritional supplements and switched to safe, and non-irritating Shaklee cleaners and laundry products.  Both of her children went for months, throughout the winter, without being sick!  She said if one of them ever had the sniffles or a slight cough, she would given them extra chewable Vita Lea and extra chewable C.  By the next day, they were always better!  She now has a whole new concept of what normal is.

She uses Get Clean for her Cleaning Company, and loves it!

Hello, My name is Lil C. and I own two cleaning companies in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  I am writing this letter because of my appreciation for Shaklee cleaning products.  As a cleaning company I would highly recommend the products because they not only cost less but they clean much better,
not to mention the safety to my people.

In the last five years I have tried many other products, including Amway and the Price Club.  The cost in some cases were doubled;  Price Club products cost me $539.00 per year, Amway cost me $378.00 a year, and Shaklee costs me only $176.55 per year.

I know many small businesses and homes try to save money by shopping sales in town.  I was one of those people.  Then I was challenged to use Shaklee products for six months to see if I could save money.  Well, I did and I am here to say Shaklee products will safe you money too.  I know that Shaklee products are helping me to accomplish my goals.  Without Shaklee products we’d just be another cleaning company.       ~ Lil C.

          Disinfect Safely With Basic G

          Shaklee Basic-G

Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can wreak havoc on your family's health and safety. Used as directed, Basic-G tackles over 40 of these pesky microbes (see below), including several animal viruses. That makes it an excellent choice for use in the kitchen, bathroom, or pet area. In addition to being economical - one quart makes up to 64 gallons - it's also EPA registered.   Shaklee Basic-G is a cleaner formulated for killing germs. It is sold as a concentrate, which allows you to vary the cleaning power, 3/8 tsp. in a pint of water is sufficient for cleaning most surfaces. It is available in a quart container which will make 64 gallons of disinfecting cleaner.  At this dilution for a spray unit and in similar dilutions for larger amounts of water, Basic-G is safe to use around youngsters, pets, those with compromised immunological defenses, respiratory problems and airway issues. It’ll look like plain water and have a hardly perceptible smell, however; it is forceful, even when watered down as instructed in a 16 oz. spray bottle.  It is also certified kosher.

          In The Kitchen
          • You can use Shaklee Basic-G to disinfect cutting surfaces, counter tops, tables, refrigerators and appliances. However, Basic-G is not food-safe, so any surface that comes in contact with food should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water after application of Shaklee Basic-G. The product has been shown to be effective at killing many food-borne bacteria, plus viruses and fungi, so it has many applications in the kitchen.

          In The Bathroom

          • Since many of the germs in a household seem to get concentrated in the bathroom, bathroom cleaning is an ideal application for Shaklee Basic-G. Surfaces in the bathroom do not even have to be rinsed, unless it is likely they will come into contact with food or other items that may be placed in the mouth. In addition to killing many viruses and bacteria, Basic-G also kills three fungi including the fungus that causes athlete's foot.

          In Pet Areas

          • While Shaklee Basic-G has been proven effective against many airborne and food-borne bacteria and viruses that affect humans, it is also effective against several diseases that can affect animals. This makes it ideal for disinfecting areas that are frequented by pets -- litter boxes, sleeping areas, chicken houses, pet doors -- any hard surface that frequently comes into contact with animals. Again, though, if you choose to use this on any food or water dishes or items that the pet may lick or chew, be sure to rinse it thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry before allowing the animal access to it.

Here is a list of the “nasties” that Basic G kills:
