Is Weight Loss Part of YOUR New Year's Resolution?

Have you decided to lose a little weight?  Maybe you have a lot to lose and maybe you could lose 5 or 10 pounds to reach your ideal weight.  You probably know that carrying around extra weight is bad for your health, but did you know that some key diseases are that are directly related to being overweight?

Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity,"* the risks for the following conditions also increases:
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Stroke
  • Liver and Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
*Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher; obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or higher.
I don't know about you, but I sure want to avoid the above diseases if I can!  Remember, only 20% of your health is determined by genetics.  That means that 80% of your health is in your control.

Yo-yo's make fun toys but awful diets!
The Yo-Yo Diet
Most diets require us to consume fewer calories and increase our physical activity.  This is the ideal way to lose weight and stay healthy.  So why don't diets tend to work in the long run?
