Holistic Skin Care

Holistic Skin Care

By Lisa W of Ancient Paths, Naturally!

Years ago I started to struggle with an irritating skin issue, psoriasis.   It was quite uncomfortable and frustrating.  In my quest to discover what might be the cure for this skin condition I learned quite a lot about how the whole body works together and that skin symptoms reveal more about our health than a simple skin issue.  Let me share with you a little about what I learned about skin care from a holistic perspective, including topical treatments, nutritional and herbal therapies, how our organ systems work together, and the spiritual roots of the issues I was dealing with.

Our Skin
Our skin is the first thing people notice when they look at us.  It is our miracle garment.  It’s soft, pliable, strong, waterproof, and self-repairing.  It communicates our age, our health status, and our emotional status.
The skin is our largest single organ, making up about 16% of the body weight of an average sized person.  Healthy skin regulates our body temperature and holds in moisture.  This is no small feat, considering that, by weight, we are about 60% water.  It’s also the outer wrapper of our immune system, protecting us from a host of invaders.  Our skin helps us excrete waste products, but it’s also an avenue for absorbing a wide range of dangerous chemicals.  Our skin also turns the sun’s rays into vitamin D, an essential nutrient for good health.  Our skin is amazing!

Topical Skin Treatments
When we have irritated skin it’s common for us to reach for something to put on it to soothe the irritation.  It’s important that we know what we’re putting on our skin because there are some nasty things in traditional skin care products.
According to The Environmental Working Group, personal care products expose children (and adults) to an average of 60 chemicals every day, which they inhale or absorb through the skin. Recent studies have demonstrated that product packaging rarely reveals the concentration, or adverse effects, of the pervasive chemicals found in every day products.  It’s just as important to know what’s NOT in your favorite product as it is to know what IS in it.  Our family uses Shaklee skin care products because they provide us with an ingredient glossary that describes every ingredient found in all of their products.  It also explains the difference between natural, naturally derived and scientifically formulated ingredients.
It’s good to know what they DON’T put in any of their products as well as what they do.  Things like parabens (endocrine disruptor, breast cancer), FD&C and D&C dyes (carcinogen, protein inhibitor, cause of hyperactivity in children, immune distruptor), butyl cellosolve (causes reproductive issues, birth defects, carcinogen), formaldehyde (carcinogen, skin rash, asthma), phenols (dermatitis, cytotoxicity, kidney damage) and propylene glycol (endocrine distruptor, allergies and asthma) are never used in any Shaklee products.  They also avoid using more than 15 other dangerous chemicals in their products.  Unfortunately, all of these dangerous chemicals are routinely found in supermarket shampoos, moisturizers, shaving and cleansing gels, tanning solutions, pharmaceuticals and even your toothpaste.  A quick internet search will reveal that you don’t want to be exposed to these chemicals, ever

Homemade Herbal Salves
Along with Shaklee’s personal care product line, our family has begun to make our own herbal salves to aid in healing of cuts.  Living on a small farm and having a busy lifestyle, sometimes someone gets a cut or a nasty gash.  Rather than traditional ointments, we have taken to harvesting herbs in our garden, drying them and creating our own salves to help fight infection and encourage healing.  Herbal salves contain only oils, herbs and beeswax and will not clog pores.  An oil infusion of herbs such as lavender, comfrey, plantain, self-heal, and chamomile added to a beeswax base has had tremendous healing properties and we have seen amazing results.  For example, my son cut off the tip of his finger just days before leaving for an intense weeklong outdoor summer event.  He made himself an herbal salve and added honey to the mix.  He applied it to his fingertip and covered it with a bandaid twice a day.  Not only did it not get infected but by the time he came home the skin had grown back with fingerprints – no scarring!  We were very impressed.  Needless to say, when my husband severely injured his foot a few years ago, we used our son’s salve to help heal the wound.  Because the salves are homemade with primarily homegrown herbs, we are confident that we’re not putting toxic chemicals onto our skin.  Whenever we need herbal oils that we cannot grow I use oils from Young Living Essential Oils

Nutrition For The Skin
Shaklee’s nutritional programs have been developed with over 55 years of nutritional research and independent clinical studies.  Because of their science-based approach, the food based supplements and Enfuselle Skin Care program contain the right nutrients, in the right forms and concentrations, to rejuvenate damaged skin, peeling away the years, so that you can maintain that healthy glow all without harsh chemicals found in traditional skin care regimens.  The Enfuselle System combined with Shaklee’s food based nutritional products provides a solid nutritional base for your skin, as well as the rest of your body.  A solid nutritional approach to skin issues such as acne, eczema and psoriasis have been shown to protect, heal and rejuvenate our skin.  Speaking before the American Academy of Dermatology, New York-based dermatologist Karen E Burke, MD reviewed the antioxidants that have been proven to be the most effective in protecting skin and reversing photo-aging damage from UV exposure.  She said, “There are three antioxidants that have been proven to decrease the effect of the sun on the skin and actually prevent further damage.  They are:  selenium, vitamin E and vitamin C.”  She went on to say that “although many topical formulations contain antioxidants, very few are actually effective in preventing or reversing damage to the skin.  That is because almost all these formulations only contain minute concentrations of the necessary antioxidants, and they are not well absorbed by the skin.”
Antioxidants keep free radicals form damaging cell walls and other cell structures like DNA, which helps protect us from cancer.  Selenium preserves tissue elasticity and slows down the aging and hardening of tissues.  Natural sourced vitamin E reduces sunburn, chronic UV-induced damage and production of cancer cells, associated with a 70% reduced risk for basal cell carcinoma.  It also reduces wrinkles and improves skin texture.  Topically, naturally sourced vitamin E soothes dry, rough skin and combined with vitamin C creates a highly protective lotion against sun damage.  Vitamin C is well known for fighting free radical damage and is the most abundant antioxidant found naturally in the skin.  It slows accelerated skin aging and can prevent the consequences of prolonged sun exposure.  Other important nutrients for our skin include zinc, B complex vitamins, and omega oils.

Body Systems & Emotions
As I was learning and applying what I was learning to myself in trying to treat and heal the psoriasis that I was struggling with, also learned that the organ systems in our bodies affect one another.  For example, in my research I learned that when the liver isn’t functioning properly that it often affects the skin.   The liver is the second largest organ in our bodies, after the skin which is the largest.  I was glad to be on a good nutritional program and hoped that my liver would find the nutritional support it needed to be happier.  By now the itchy and frustrating skin problems were significantly less but when it would flare up, boy would I be miserable!  So I went on a quest to find out what else might help my liver become happier.   Because I didn’t drink or have a liver disease and was cutting out chemical exposure in my home, I decided to follow a new and intriguing thread in my search.
One of the things I learned was that emotions affect our organ systems in different ways and emotions such as anger and frustration have negative effects on the liver while kindness has a positive effect on the liver.  Anger and frustration damage the liver. So here I was with a catch-22 because I was frustrated with the psoriasis and sometimes I did find myself getting angry about it.  I also learned that the liver is often the source for headaches, which I had been having on and off for a while up till this point.  Now I had two immediate reasons to support my liver – psoriasis and headaches.  I had multiple reasons to really get myself in check and control my frustration better.  Not only did it not do any good real good for me to be frustrated, it was causing me physical damage and causing the very thing I was frustrated about to be worse.

Spiritual Roots of Disease
The final key in unlocking the mystery of the, by that time, come-and-go psoriasis was learning about the spiritual roots of disease.  I learned that spiritually psoriasis is rooted in self-hatred, a lack of self-esteem and conflict with identity.  These go along well with the anger and frustration that damages the liver and I saw the connection right away.  While you may not consider these issues spiritual as much as emotional it’s important to know that as a believer in and follower of the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob I know that my G-d has said that He loves me and accepts me, so for me to harbor hate in my heart, even for myself, is a sin.  It says that I don’t believe that He is truthful when He says that He loves me and considers me a special treasure, it is my way of calling Him a liar.  And if I cannot even love myself, how can I love anyone else, like my husband and my children?  I needed to come to grips with the sin in my life and repent, turn around and stop sinning, and walk in the right way.  At the time we were learning this material my elbows itched like mad.  About a week after working through some of the weighty issues in the course we were taking I noticed that my elbows were fine – 100% fine!  There wasn’t any trace of the psoriasis left on my arms at all, the skin looked and felt completely normal!  Not only did this process open the door for healing of my skin, but I was healed of a debilitating allergy to tree nuts as well.  Praise G-d for His healing touch!!

While I once dealt with adult acne, psoriasis and other issues I now deal with none of these things in my life.  My family and I have been completely changed as we have taken charge of our health and learned about holistic health care, and applied what we’ve learned.  We have been created perfectly and it leaves me in wonder and awe of our Creator.  From food based nutritional supplementation, chemical free personal products, herbal treatments, balancing the body systems, keeping our emotions balanced and fighting against sin in our lives, we will all tell you that we are not only healthier, but we’re happier too!

Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart Sued for Selling Toxic Baby Shampoo
By Sarah Pierce

If you purchased Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo or Wal-Mart brand Equate Tearless Baby Wash, you may want to stop using it. A class action lawsuit has been approved this month that claims these products may contain a toxin linked to cancer.
The class action lawsuit, filed earlier this year, accuses Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart Stores of selling shampoo and baby wash that allegedly contains methylene chloride, an ingredient banned by the FDA in cosmetics because it’s linked to cancer. The law firm that filed the lawsuit is also investigating Target’s Night-time Bath and Body Wash, which is not currently named in the suit.

A third Johnson & Johnson plant is now also under investigation for alleged quality concerns. The new Johnson & Johnson plant is one that manufactures Pepcid and Mylanta among other products. You can read the details on that investigation at Legafi.

So what is a safe and healthy alternative to store bought baby wash and shampoo?  ShakleeBaby!
The ShakleeBaby product line includes:

Amazing Alfalfa

Alfalfa is one of the most beneficial foods of all creation.  For thousands of years alfalfa has been known as "The Father of All Foods" because it's importance was widely recognized.  In fact, alfalfa has long been considered "a superfood" because it is so rich in bio-available nutrients.  Especially rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and iron in their most digestible forms, alfalfa also contains fluoride in a natural form, beneficial trace minerals, protein, fiber, all vitamins including vitamin A as beta carotene, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K, essential fatty acids, antioxidants such as chlorophyll, Octacosanol, Saponins, Carotenoids and other phytonutrients.  Generations ago the Arabs who raised wonderful horses found that alfalfa made their horses strong and swift.

Long ago, organic cereal grasses and green vegetables were our ancestors' original dietary supplements.  Ancient people knew that foods helped to protect their health and they had learned early on what plants were required for overall good health as well as which plants provided benefits for various illnesses.  Concentrated green foods provide the same benefits to us today that they did for our ancestors.

Alfalfa is an immune-system stimulant and blood purifier, and it aids in the assimilation of protein, fats and carbohydrates.  Alfalfa alkalizes, detoxifies and purifies the body.  For many centuries alfalfa has been found to aid in the healing of a variety of illnesses including:
    • arthritis
    • bleeding gums
    • blood sugar regulation
    • body and breath odor
    • nosebleeds
    • Digestive System:  intestinal ulcers, gastritis, hemorrhoids
    • Heart Health:  cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke risk reductions
    • Immune System:   allergies, asthma, cancer and infections
    • Skin Health:  athlete's foot, burns, eczema
    • Women's Health:  anemia, endometriosis, menopause related problems, osteoporosis, water retention

While we appreciate the benefits of alfalfa and appreciate alfalfa sprouts on our salad or on a really good sandwich, few of us eat alfalfa as a food and the sprouts have been found to be contaminated with bacteria and pesticides.  Having organic alfalfa in a tablet form sure makes it easy to include this wonder herb in our daily diet without feeling like we need to eat from a bale of hay or choke down some of those "green drinks".

Shaklee has a wonderful Alfalfa Complex available in tablet form made from 3 grams of alfalfa and a little spearmint.

Keep in mind, if you are allergic to grasses that you are likely allergic to alfalfa too, so to use it with care.  And as always, talk to your physician about supplementing your diet with herbs.  Some prescription medication and herb combinations are not beneficial at all, and in fact some can be quite harmful.

    Liz Sue's Skin Care Experiment

    Liz Sue’s Enfuselle Experience

I began using skin care and make-up when I was 15 years old.  I would spend an hour in the bathroom, looking at a magazine studying make-up techniques and applying my makeup all different ways.  I thought I did a pretty good job on the eye makeup especially.

When I was 20 years old, I was approached by a woman who let me know that it was obvious that I was putting blush on my face without the use of foundation and that it did not look good.  Hmm.  A few weeks later, I was approached by another woman who asked if I would like to have a makeover.  I figured I better since apparently I had some things to learn.

She showed me a pink skin care and make up line, and while she worked with me, she gave me many more tips.  I decided to not only use this system, but to start to sell it.  I sold it and/or used it for 18 years.  The main point in using the skin care for me was that I would be protecting my skin and looking good along the way with the use of the make-up.

When I was introduced to Shaklee products in 2000, I was told about the Enfuselle Skin Care line.  I was definitely not interested.  I had the stuff that I loved and was very loyal to it.  However, when I decided to build a business in 2001, it was suggested that I might want to give my opinion about the skin care line.  I knew what my opinion was going to be.  I was NOT going to like that Shaklee stuff.  But, I decided to test their stuff so that I could give a fact-based opinion.

I decided to do half my face.  I gave the left side to Enfuselle. This was my worst side because it was always in the sun when I drove.  I got the entire skin care system.  I continued using MY product line on the right side.  And, so the experiment began.  I only used the products that were similar so that I could get a fair summary of any changes.

In 2 days, I noticed a difference on the left side.  I was surprised because the crow’s feet started to smooth out.  I could not help but think that the C&E PM was an amazing nighttime moisturizer.
30 days later I could see that there was a definite difference in the quality of the skin on the left hand side.  But now, I was really mad!  I did NOT want that Shaklee stuff to win!!  I knew that there were skin care lines which worked for 8-10 weeks and then stop working.  So, I decided that I would continue my experiment until three months had passed.

After 3 months, I conceded defeat.  The left side looked really good.  The right side had not changed one bit.  I was afraid I was going to start looking like a stroke victim because the left side was so much better looking and healthier looking.  The right side was saggy looking and definitely had wrinkles.  The Shaklee skin care system had officially beaten my stuff!

About 6-9 months later, I went to a Shaklee Science Fair.  They had a machine that allowed me to see my face at the surface level and a layer below.  I was the youngest person standing in line at the age of 35.  Turned out I had the WORST skin of all.  The scientist told me that I had SEVERE Sun Damage.
I argued with him vehemently.  “I have been taking care of my face for 18 years to avoid ever having to hear those words!”  His response was for me to look at the screen again.  Nobody else had that kind of skin.  Grrr.  I asked him what I could do about it.  He told me to use C&E PM Repair.  I asked how much.  He said, “A tube a day.”

He was kind of joking, but kind of not.  I got mad…again.  This time it was because of the sense of betrayal I felt: That skin care line that I had used for 18 years and had trusted to protect my face had not lived up to what it said it was doing!  In fact, it had allowed my skin to seriously age and be dramatically damaged.  That was the last straw for me for any loyalty I had ever felt toward my old product line.
Soon after, the Minerelles make-up line was introduced. I dumped all my old stuff and moved forward into the land of healing and repair work. No botox or face lift needed: Just the vitamin-filled products that Shaklee absolutely guaranteed.
The health of my skin continued to improve and the next year I had it tested again at a Shaklee Science Fair. My skin moisture had improved greatly, but still needed some more time to heal. I was okay with this kind of feedback. In fact, I was thrilled, because even a year later, the products were obviously still working!

In 2009, I went to a high end spa and had a facial treatment. The aestitician was impressed with the quality of my skin. She asked what I used and was not surprised to hear that it was Shaklee. She thought I was using a high end product. Then, she told me about how other skin care and make up lines cause all sorts of under-the-skin eruptions. When she mentioned my old product line as one of the culprits, I just shook my head. Can you imagine how much worse my face would be if I had continued using that line?

I am so glad that I changed brands and started using Shaklee’s Enfuselle Skin Care System and the Minerelles Make-up line. My skin is happier and healthier for it! I like looking in the mirror and seeing healthier skin with less wrinkles and fewer fine lines. I intend to look as young as I feel as long as I can.

    About Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. Lavender is an adaptogen, and therefore can assist the body when adapting to stress or imbalances. It is a great aid for relaxing and winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that can also boost stamina and energy. Therapeutic-grade lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. It may be used to soothe and cleanse common cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to discover these properties when he was severely burned in a laboratory explosion. Lavender may also be used to enhance the flavor of foods.

    Product Summary
Lavender essential oil is known as the most popular and versatile essential oil. It is steam distilled from Lavandula angustifolia, a perennial, busy shrub with a flowery top. The many properties of lavender essential oil contribute to a vast range of usage. It is highly regarded as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, for skin care, or as a lovely fragrance.

    Product Story
Traditionally used to treat burns, lavender is one of history’s most celebrated and versatile essential
oils. In ancient Greece, Pedanius Dioscorides, a physician, pharmacologist, and botanist, extolled the medicinal qualities of lavender. Greeks also used lavender as a perfume. The Romans used lavender in their baths for washing, for its healing and antiseptic qualities, and to deter insects. The Egyptians used lavender as an ingredient in incense and perfume. Queen Elizabeth I used lavender as a tea to treat her frequent migraines.

Following a laboratory explosion that severely burned his arm, a French scientist named Rene Gattefosse was the first modern scientist to document lavender’s ability to promote tissue regeneration.
Today, we use lavender as a tea, to dress wounds, to induce sleep, ease depression, and reduce stress. Lavender oil is one of the safest essential oils and can be used in full strength on the skin. The benefits of lavender essential oil are limitless. After 14 Years, My Skin Cleared Up In 7 Months!!

When I was 13 years old, my face started breaking out. My sisters (6 of them) had peaches and cream complexions. My mom felt badly for me, so she started taking me to dermatologists. Within a 10 year span, I went to 14 different doctors.

Each doctor had his own solution; and all of them included some type of antibiotic. I had salves (that burned), shots in my arm and cortisone shots in my face, dry ice therapy, sun lamp treatments, etc. Each time my skin would clear up, but then after stopping the treatments, my skin would break out again and get worse. My few pimples turned into acne and I was eventually referred to the head of dermatology at Johns Hopkins. There, they put me on 6 tetracycline tablets a day for 2 years. Can you imagine taking antibiotics for 2 years – and at such high levels? I moved to New York when I was 23 years old. One day at my new job, my mom called to say she had made an appointment for me with the head of Columbia Hospital. I started crying and said that I was done. I couldn’t take the ups and downs, the disappointments anymore – I would rather have the acne!

When I got off the phone, Helen, one of the secretaries in the office heard me on the phone. She said, “I have something that will clear up your skin for good. It may take a year, but it will get to the root of the problem.” She was a beautiful woman – beautiful hair and skin, but she was always taking pills and I thought she must be sick!!!!! There was something so genuine and caring about what she said and how she said it that I was willing to give it a try.

She was very honest and said that my skin might get worse before it could get better because of all the medications I had taken. That it all had to come out so I could get better. And, that made sense to me. Well, the products she was talking about was Shaklee. I took ONLY 3 products – Energizing Soy Protein, Vita-Lea and Herb-Lax.

At first my skin did start breaking out – but at the same time a lot of other things started happening. I started sleeping better, my PMS symptoms went away, the skin around my eyes started looking healthier – no more circles, and I had more energy. I started experiencing a feeling of well being that I had NEVER experienced before. Well, true to Helen’s word, my skin was clear within 7 months.
